Deregistering a Dog in Switzerland: Step-by-Step Guide
Not just registering, but also deregistering a dog is mandatory in Switzerland. Forgetting this step can result in unjustified dog tax bills for an animal that no longer lives in your household.
When do I need to deregister my dog?
- Death of the dog: deregister within the municipality's deadline, usually 10 to 30 days
- Sale or transfer: the new owner must register in their municipality; you deregister in yours
- Moving abroad: deregister with your municipality and update AMICUS
Step 1: Reporting in AMICUS
The death, sale or export of a dog must be reported within ten days in the national AMICUS database, usually via your vet practice.
Step 2: Deregistering with your municipality
Most municipalities also require formal deregistration with the residents' registration office or dog control office.
Dog tax refund
If the annual tax was already paid in advance, many municipalities refund the pro-rata amount for the remaining months if the dog is deregistered mid-year.
What happens if I forget to deregister?
Without deregistration, the dog is administratively still considered kept — so the municipality will send you a bill again the following year.
When must you deregister your dog?
You must deregister your dog if: the dog dies, you rehome or sell the dog, the dog is permanently taken abroad, or you move to another municipality (where you re-register). Deadlines vary — most municipalities require deregistration within 10 to 14 days of the relevant event.
How to deregister from AMICUS
AMICUS deregistration is handled by a licensed veterinarian (in the case of death) or by contacting the AMICUS administration center. When a dog dies, the vet will update the database during the final visit. For other cases (rehoming, export), the owner must initiate the update through their vet or the AMICUS portal.
Refund of pre-paid dog tax
If you have already paid the annual dog tax and your dog is deregistered mid-year, some municipalities will refund the unused portion on a pro-rata basis. Submit a written request to the municipal finance office, including proof of deregistration and your bank account details for the refund transfer.
