Key differences between Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft

Switzerland has two Basel half-cantons: Basel-Stadt (the city canton) and Basel-Landschaft (the surrounding area). Each sets its own dog tax rate independently. For Basel-Stadt, the cantonal rate applies directly; in Basel-Landschaft, individual municipalities may set their own surcharges within the cantonal framework.

Exemptions in Basel

Assistance dogs, guide dogs, and dogs used in official capacities are generally exempt from dog tax in the Basel cantons. Senior residents and people with disabilities may also qualify for a reduced rate — check with the relevant municipal tax authority.

What else do dog owners in Basel need to know?

In addition to dog tax, Basel-Stadt requires liability insurance for all dogs. Registration must be completed within 10 days of acquiring a dog. Microchipping and AMICUS registration are mandatory throughout Switzerland.
