How Accurate Is the Dog Tax Calculator?

Methodology · Updated 2026 · ~4 min read

Many users rightly wonder how reliable an online estimate can be, given that Switzerland has no unified system. This article openly explains how our calculator works.

Where does the data come from?

The amounts shown in the calculator are cantonal indicative values for the first dog, based on an analysis of publicly available cantonal and municipal tax regulations.

What the calculator does NOT account for

  • Individual municipal surcharges or discounts within a canton
  • Breed-specific surcharges applied by certain municipalities
  • One-time registration or microchipping fees on top of the annual tax
  • Recent rate increases decided mid-tax-year
In short: our calculator provides a solid order of magnitude for budget planning. For the exact, legally binding amount, your municipality's residents' registration or tax office is always authoritative.

How often is the data updated?

We review the cantonal indicative values at least once a year, usually at the start of the tax year.

Why not a calculator with exact municipal amounts?

Switzerland has around 2,000 municipalities, many with their own rates, discounts or surcharges. We deliberately chose a transparent cantonal estimate rather than simulating false precision at municipal level.
