Importing a Dog from Abroad: Rules & Tax Liability

Anyone bringing a dog into Switzerland from abroad must comply with veterinary import regulations as well as the subsequent dog tax obligation.

Import regulations in brief

• ISO-compliant microchip identification before entry
• Valid rabies vaccination record, with a waiting period depending on country of origin
• For non-EU countries, an additional blood test (titre test) is required, plus a waiting period

When does dog tax liability begin?

As soon as your residence is established in Switzerland and the dog lives with you, the municipal dog tax obligation applies — regardless of whether the dog was brought in from abroad or acquired in Switzerland.

Registering after entry

1. Book an appointment with a Swiss vet for a check-up and AMICUS registration
2. Register with your home municipality, including chip number and vaccination record
3. Check whether your canton requires liability insurance or a dog training course
