Unpaid Dog Tax: The Consequences
An unpaid dog tax bill doesn't disappear on its own. As with any other municipal levy, non-payment triggers a multi-step process.
What happens if you don't pay
- Payment deadline: usually 30 days as stated on the invoice
- Reminder: after the deadline, a written reminder follows, often already with a fee
- Debt collection: if the reminder is ignored, the municipality can start debt collection proceedings
- Late interest: many municipalities also charge interest on the outstanding amount
⚠️ A debt collection entry can affect your creditworthiness, for example when applying for a rental apartment.
Statute of limitations for dog tax
Like other municipal levies, dog tax is subject to a limitation period, set by cantonal tax law or municipal regulations, typically several years.
What to do if you have payment difficulties
- Contact your municipality proactively rather than ignoring the bill
- Ask about instalment payment or a deadline extension
- Check whether a reduction is possible in your municipality
Can the municipality take away my dog?
Unpaid dog tax alone does not lead to the dog being taken away. It is a civil debt collection process, like any other unpaid bill.
